The three most common implementation methods


Relay crop

Sown with cereal

#1 Best Chance of Success

Advantages Early establishment. Even stand. Established root system once cash crop comes off. No second pass necessary.

Disadvantages Very few in-crop herbicide options. Could compete with cash crop in a wet year.

Disc Drill into crop

#2 Best Chance of Success

Advantages Good seed to soil contact. Not dependent on rain for germination. Herbicide option for cash crop.

Disadvantages Cash crop can close canopy before the relay is established. Dry conditions (susceptible to drought). Another drill pass.

Broadcast

#3 Best Chance of Success

Advantages Easy to hit ideal timing (before a rain)

Disadvantages Needs rain. Poor seed to soil contact. Low germination. Limited sunlight.
