Reduce soil erosion, scavenge nutrients & gain all the benefits of a fall cover crop with these annual plant species.
Remember to keep expectations in check with fall-seeded annual cover crops due to limited moisture & sunlight in our northern climate.
Fall Seeded Annual Cover: Sow after cereal or canola harvest.
Annual Cover Crop Recommendation
After Cereal or Canola Harvest
Plant species selected with the carbon:nitrogen ratio in mind. This allows you to better manage residue in spring and provide an ideal home for soil biology to cycle nutrients & build soil aggregates.

Fall Seeded Annual Cover
Why Each Plant Species & Rates?
PEAS @ 25 Ibs/acre: selected due to this cool-season legume providing much-needed nitrogen to balance the system. (Specifically, after a cereal harvest).
OATS @ 35 Ibs/acre: selected due to their ability to scavenge nutrients and rapid fall establishment.
BUCKWHEAT @ 2 Ibs/acre: selected due to this plant’s ability to solubilize unavailable phosphorus through root exudates. Fast establishing. Will be terminated by frost earlier than other species.
FLAX @ 2 Ibs/acre: selected due to the high mycorrhizal dependency, which promotes and feeds the fungal hyphae network.
PURPLE TOP TURNIP @ 1 Ib/acre: selected for cool-season brassica fast-growing, frost tolerant, nutrient scavenging ability.
