Warm Season Cover Week

Hello friends,

Did you miss our Warm Season Cover Week?

This week-long event brought together experienced farmers from across the prairies to share their knowledge and experiences growing our Warm Season Cover blend. The goal of the week? To bring awareness to the value warm season plant species can have on the farm.

Enjoy the read.

Warm Season Cover Week

Monday: c4 plant species

The Warm Season Cover is composed of primarily warm season (C4) plant species. This allows you to put the right plant species in the right context (warm season plants = summer months).

  • Warm Season Plants (C4) have evolved in hot/dry conditions.

  • Cool Season Plants (C3) have evolved in cool/wet conditions.

Wednesday: Uses On The Farm

C4 plants have evolved to photosynthesize more efficiently in dry climates/high temperatures to accumulate significantly more biomass than their C3 counterparts.

  • Silage/dry hay (50-60 days)

  • Swath grazing

  • Sow after cereal rye, winter wheat, winter triticale (double cropping)

  • Grazing

  • Potholes/unseeded acres

To learn more about the advantages C4 plants have over C3 plants in conditions of little moisture or high temperatures.

Thursday: Swath Grazing Tips

On Thursday, Owen Taylor shared his farm experiences over the past few years on swath grazing the Warm Season Cover blend.

"When using a swather, the bigger, the better. This will help cattle find it easier to locate the swaths, especially in heavy snow conditions. We had a customer this year who put two 35ft swaths together, and his cows easily grazed/found the swaths through several feet of snow."
